Combe Head Meadow Vineyard

We understand that Combe Head Vineyard was first planted in the 1980's. This sheltered southwest facing slope is host to one of the older vineyards in Devon and classified as a heritage vineyard.

We moved to Combe Head Meadow in July 2022, at this point the vineyard had been left wild for several years. The hard work of clearing it and restoring it has truly been a labour of love, it took 2 years to see our first harvest in autumn 2024.

Our Grape Varieties

Madeleine Angevine

Most of our vines are Madeleine Angevine. It was a popular variety in the late 20th century, especially in the west country as it copes with the higher rainfall. However it is very susceptible to disease and wasps and is high maintenance to keep in good condition. Picked early it has a crisp acidity, and tends to have a light floral aroma and flavor characteristics include lemon and green apple. Sometimes referred to affectionately by it’s nickname ‘Mad Angie’!

Pinot Noir

The final two rows of our vineyards are Pinot Noir. This is a red grape variety which grows vigorously and increasingly it is being planted across Britain, it is now the second most widely planted variety. Making British red wine is very difficult due to the low level of sunshine compared to the continent however Pinot Noir is a key ingredient for fine English sparkling wines.

Seyval Blanc

At some point between the 1980's and the present day someone infilled some of the gaps in the vineyard with Seyval Blanc. See if you can find them! The Seyval Blanc is a hardy and reliable vine mainly used for sparkling wine, it is late ripening but it’s disease resistance is likely to be the reason a previous owner planted this.
